Alcohol Consumption in Pregnancy by Council Areas
Alcohol consumption in pregnancy is collected at a woman's antenatal booking appointment. From April 2013 onwards alcohol consumption in pregnancy is defined as the average weekly alcohol units consumed in the three months prior to the antenatal booking appointment. Prior to April 2013 it was defined as units of alcohol consumed in the week prior to antenatal booking. Data is presented by council areas.
Data on alcohol consumption is based on self-reported information. The reliability of self-reported alcohol consumption is well known to be problematic. It is likely that, for some council areas, the SMR02 data presented do not reflect the true average weekly alcohol consumption during pregnancy due to under reporting of the data. Results should therefore be interpreted with caution.
