Data for number of patients, discharges and hospital residents by counts and rates for Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) categories. This is split by health board of residence.

| FinancialYear | text | Financial years start on 1 April and end on 31 March. For example, financial year 2017/2018 covers the period 1 April 2017 – 31 March 2018. | |
| HBR | text | 9-digit code for health board of residence. The Scotland total is also included. | |
| HBRQF | text | Qualifier for HBR, indicating Scotland totals. | |
| SIMD | numeric | The SIMD uses a wide range of information for small areas (data zones) to identify concentrations of multiple deprivation across Scotland. The data zones are then arranged in five groups (quintiles), ranging from the most deprived (1 - contains the 20% most deprived datazones) to the least deprived (5 - contains the 20% least deprived datazones). | DischargeCount | numeric | The total number of discharges. A hospital discharge marks the end of an episode of care. Discharges include deaths, transfers to other specialties/significant facilities and hospitals, and discharges home or to other regular place of residence. | |
| DischargeRates | numeric | The annual number of discharges relative to the size of the population, expressed per 100,000 population. The crude rate takes no account of differences between populations with regard to age and gender composition. | |
| PatientsCount | numeric | The total number of patients. A patient is defined as an individual discharged from hospital (including as a transfer out) at least once during the financial year. Regardless of how many times they have been discharged during the financial year, patients are counted only once in each financial year at the Scotland level. However, if their SIMD quintile changes during the year as a result of moving to a different data zone, they will be counted more than once. At the health board of residence level, patients will be counted more than once in each year if they have moved from one health board of residence and/or SIMD quintile to another. | |
| PatientsRates | numeric | The annual number of patients relative to the size of the population, expressed per 100,000 population. The crude rate takes no account of differences between populations with regard to age and gender composition. | |
| HospitalResidentsCount | numeric | The total number of hospital residents. A hospital resident is an individual who is an inpatient at midnight on 31 March, before the beginning of the next financial year (1 April). Although the term 'hospital resident' is used for simplicity, some people will be looked after in care homes (under contract to the local NHS Board). | |
