| FinancialYear | text | The financial year in which the patient was discharged. Financial years start on 1 April and end on 31 March. For example, financial year 2017/2018 covers the period 1 April 2017 – 31 March 2018. | |

| HBT | text | 9-digit code for health board of treatment and 6-digit codes for special health boards. | |
| Dataset | text | The data source that is reported from. SMR01 covers non-psychiatric records and SMR04 covers psychiatric records. Total covers both groups. | |

| DischargeCount | numeric | This field tells you how many discharges took place for each combination of board of residence and treatment. A discharge represents the end of a hospital episode. Discharges include: deaths; transfers to other specialties, consultants, significant facilities and hospitals; and routine discharges home. Discharges are assigned to financial year according to the date of discharge. | |
| DischargeCountQF | text | A qualifier to give extra information about the discharge count. | |
| PatientsCount | numeric | This field tells you how many patients from each NHS board of residence were treated within their own board, and how many were treated outside their board. A patient is defined as an individual discharged from hospital (including as a transfer out) at least once during the financial year. | |
