Termination of Pregnancy in Scotland

Termination data are derived from the notifications of abortion to the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland (CMO) under the abortion (Scotland) regulations 1991. Information is provided by age, gestation, method of termination, NHS board of residence, deprivation area, previous termination, parity and council area of residence.

An abortion can either be induced (therapeutic) or spontaneous (miscarriage). The termination of pregnancy statistics reports on induced abortions only. A termination of pregnancy can be performed surgically (eg vacuum aspiration, dilation and curettage) or medically.

For more information on terminations of pregnancy see the terminations section of the PHS Data and Intelligence website and the annual publication. For related topics, please see the sexual health pages.

The date of the next release can be found on our list of forthcoming publications.

Time frame of data and timeliness Data are presented by calendar year. The dataset is generally thought to be complete by end of March when an extract from the database is taken. A small number of notifications that miss this cut-off are subsequently included in the following year’s report.
Coverage Includes notifications of abortion to the Chief Medical Officer, Scotland for terminations of pregnancy carried out in Scotland.
Completeness There may be a small number of late termination forms or forms returned to units for querying that are not keyed in time (approximately 0.5% of records per annum). Data are then revised at following year's update.
Accuracy Abortion notification information on forms is clerically checked and also validated at data entry. Statistics are compared to previous year's figures.
Continuity of data Open data is available from 1992 onwards when postcode became available.
Concepts and definitions Concepts and definitions are provided in the full report available on the PHS website.
Disclosure The PHS statistical disclosure protocol has been followed.
Revision statement Receipt of late abortion notifications may be received after publication, with figures being revised at next update.
